Remind me if nobody replies
Send a message and get it back at the top of the inbox if no reply has come by the time you pick.
Details
- In the composer, the reminder button next to schedule send offers in 1 day, in 3 days, in 1 week, or a date and time. On a conversation you sent mail in, the menu has “Remind me if nobody replies”, and “Cancel reminder” while one is waiting. “Waiting for a reply” in the sidebar lists the conversations whose reminder nobody has answered yet.
- If no real reply has arrived by then, the conversation returns to the top of the inbox, unread and marked “No reply yet”, with a push to your phones. The push has its own switch, Reminders, in Account → Notifications.
- A real reply is a message arriving in the conversation that is not automatic, is not a delivery report and does not come from your own sending address. An out of office answer, or a subject such as “Automatic reply”, does not count. A real reply closes the reminder by itself.
- Reminders are checked every 5 minutes. A conversation holds one waiting reminder per person, so setting another, or sending again in the conversation with a new reminder, replaces the one that was waiting. A reminder is cancelled when its message is cancelled or fails to send. It is also cancelled when its conversation sits in the Bin or in Spam at the due time, and that conversation is not brought back.
- With scheduled send, the reminder has to be later than the time the message goes out, and it can be at most a year ahead. A reminder set while sending attaches to the conversation when the message actually goes out, so a scheduled message shows under “Waiting for a reply” only once it is sent.
- On the REST API, POST /emails takes followUpAt, an ISO 8601 instant or a duration such as P3D, and /follow-ups lists, sets and cancels reminders. The SDK has followUpAt on emails.send, plus followUps.list, set and cancel. The MCP server has followUpAt on sendEmail and replyToEmail, plus listFollowUps, setFollowUp and cancelFollowUp. Search finds the waiting ones in every folder with is:waiting in:anywhere.
