The Gmail app

Add an address to the Gmail app on Android or iPhone as an IMAP account of its own.

Before you start

  • You need an app password for the address, made in the Passwords view of its Mail apps tab under Settings → Addresses, or a setup link someone emailed you.
  • The Gmail app adds the address as an account of its own, beside your Google account, and reads it over IMAP. For Gmail in a browser, use forwarding and Send mail as instead.

On Android

  1. In the Gmail app, tap your profile picture, then Add another account, then Other.
  2. Enter the address and tap Manual setup.
  3. Choose Personal (IMAP), enter the app password and tap Next.
  4. Under Incoming server settings, enter the whole address as Username and imap.openemail.uk as Server. If Gmail shows Port and Security type, choose 993 and SSL/TLS. Tap Next.
  5. Under Outgoing server settings, keep Require sign-in on, and enter the whole address as Username, the app password and smtp.openemail.uk as SMTP server. If Gmail shows Port and Security type, choose 465 and SSL/TLS. Tap Next.
  6. Choose how often Gmail checks for mail, give the account a name and tap Next.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In the Gmail app, tap your profile picture, then Add another account, then Other (IMAP).
  2. Enter the address and tap Next, then enter the app password.
  3. When Gmail asks for the servers, enter imap.openemail.uk on port 993 and smtp.openemail.uk on port 465, both with SSL, and the whole address and the app password for each.
  4. Tap Next to finish.

Using it

  • Switch between the address and your Google account with your profile picture.
  • On Android, Gmail checks the address on the schedule under Sync frequency in the settings of the account.
  • Mail sent from the account goes out through OpenEmail, and a copy lands in Sent.
  • Deleting a message moves its whole conversation to Trash, which is Bin in OpenEmail.

If it does not work

  • Gmail says the username or password is wrong: the username must be the whole address on both servers, and the password an app password.
  • Gmail cannot reach the server: set the security type to SSL/TLS, never STARTTLS, with ports 993 and 465.
  • The app asks for the password again and again: the password was revoked, or sign-ins paused for up to 15 minutes after too many wrong passwords. Correct the password in the app, then wait before trying again.
