Labels

Name a label, pick one of six colours, and filter the list down to it.

Details

  • Created from the + beside Labels in the sidebar or from Settings → Labels, which is also the only place an existing one can be renamed or recoloured. Deleting works from either, though the sidebar’s right-click menu is hidden on a label that has children. A parent goes from Settings → Labels.
  • Clicking a label in the sidebar filters the list you are already in rather than opening a folder of its own, and the ids ride in the URL as ?labels=one,two. A slash in the name nests: Work/Clients shows as Clients under a Work group, and a name in [brackets] is filed under Other.
  • A thread’s right-click menu carries a Labels submenu, and it ticks the labels you already have on and off rather than making new ones. It offers to create one only while you have none, so the first label is the only one a thread can produce.
  • Six colours (Ochre, Clay and Rose warm, Teal, Blue and Violet cool) with no picker behind them. Three of each, so labelling by temperature does not run out on one side. Each carries white text at better than 4.5:1, so a chip holds its contrast on a light list and does not become a hole in a dark one.
  • Labels are read and written through the active connection, so they belong to the mailbox rather than the workspace: switch mailbox in the sidebar and the whole set changes. Settings → Labels names the one you are editing, because otherwise the switch looks like the labels have been deleted.
