Read in your language
A message you cannot read, turned into a language you can, without leaving it.
Details
- Translate from the ⋯ menu on any message. It arrives in place (same thread, same message, same reply button) rather than in a panel beside the original.
- Two hundred languages, searchable by their own names rather than ours, and switchable while you read: the first choice is a guess, and the second one should not cost a trip to settings. It is the same table the composer sends in, so a language you can read a message in is one you can answer in.
- The language it reaches for first is yours to set in Settings → General, separately from the language the app itself is in. They are the same for most people and not for anyone who reads a second language without wanting the interface in it.
- Names, companies, links, order numbers, prices and dates are left exactly as they arrived, so you can still match them against the original. A bar across the top says which language you are reading and offers the original back in one click.
- Quoted replies underneath are left alone. A four-deep chain is mostly the same text repeated, and nobody translates a thread to re-read the part they wrote.
- Almost nothing translates on its own, and the exception is named rather than hidden: a thread you sent translated opens its next reply already turned into your language, which is “Read replies to translated mail in your language” in Settings → General and is ON until you turn it off. Everything else runs only when you ask, on the message you asked about, and the result is remembered so asking twice costs nothing.
