Files on your own domain

Download links for the files you send on a subdomain you choose, such as files.yourdomain.com, instead of the OpenEmail address.

Details

  • One per domain, set on the domain’s Files tab in Settings → Domains, or through PATCH /domains/{id}, as soon as the ownership TXT that proves the domain is yours is published. The domain does not have to be receiving mail yet. The name starts filled in as files.yourdomain.com, and you can keep it or pick any other subdomain of that domain.
  • Setting it up prepares an address for that name alone and shows one CNAME record pointing at it. Add that record at your DNS provider, or press Sync on a domain connected to Cloudflare and it is written for you. The HTTPS certificate for the name is issued automatically.
  • It switches on once a check over HTTPS passes, and the status then reads Active. Until then downloads keep using the OpenEmail address, and they go back to it when a name that worked fails three checks in a row or goes 2 hours without passing one. The Files tab checks on its own while it is open, at most every 30 seconds, and stops once the status settles.
  • Mail already sent keeps the name it went out with. After you change or remove the files domain, those download links keep working as long as the old CNAME record stays in place. On a domain connected to Cloudflare the old record does not stay. Changing or removing the name on the Files tab takes it out of your zone right away, and a change through the API takes it out at the next Sync, so download links in mail already sent stop working.
  • It is a separate name from the tracking domain and one name cannot be both, so a domain can carry either, or both, and setting up one leaves the other alone.
  • The name serves file downloads and nothing else, and it only serves files sent by the workspace that owns it.
