Mute

Silence a conversation you no longer need to follow. New replies skip the inbox and alert nobody.

Details

  • Mute is in the right-click menu of a conversation, in the menu of an open conversation and in the bar that appears when several are selected. On the phone it is in the thread menu and in the multi-select sheet.
  • A muted conversation in the inbox moves to the archive. From then on new mail in it goes straight to the archive, unread, with no push, no sound and no desktop notification.
  • A mute applies to everyone on the workspace, because the state of a conversation is shared. Mail addressed only to you does not bring a muted conversation back.
  • Unmute takes the mute off and leaves the conversation where it is. The next message arrives in the inbox as usual. Search finds muted conversations in every folder with is:muted in:anywhere.
  • An out of office reply still goes out on a muted conversation, and AI labels skip it. A webhook for mail that arrived in a muted conversation carries muted: true.
  • The same is on the REST API as POST /threads/{id}/mute and POST /threads/{id}/unmute, on the SDK as threads.mute and threads.unmute, on the command line as openemail threads mute and openemail threads unmute, and on the MCP server as muteThreads and unmuteThreads.
