What is a merged inbox?
A merged inbox, also called a unified inbox, shows several addresses as one list instead of a mailbox each. Every message still belongs to the address it was sent to.
How it works
Everything, minus the one you unticked
An empty filter means every address, so unticking one leaves you with all the others. The last one stays ticked, because nothing selected is how everything is stored.
A narrowed view is a link
The selection sits in the URL as ?address=, so it survives a reload and can be sent as a link. Names that no longer resolve are dropped on the way to the server.
Addresses nobody created get one row
A catch-all domain ends its group with one *@domain row for addresses that exist only because mail arrived. Tick it alone to read those. Create one yourself and it gets its own row.

Read everything in one list and narrow only when one address is the whole job.

Bookmark the narrow view
A narrowed list is a URL, so bookmark the ones you use instead of re-ticking.

To read what a catch-all caught, tick only its *@domain row.
