New-mail alerts
A chime from the tab you keep open.

Turn alerts on once, and while OpenEmail is open in a tab, new mail brings a desktop alert naming the sender and the subject. Click it to open the conversation.

In short

What is a new-mail alert?

A new-mail alert is a notice from your browser that a message has arrived, so you can work elsewhere without watching the inbox. Here they come from the OpenEmail tab itself, which keeps checking for new mail while it sits behind your other tabs.

How it works

The tab keeps checking

The open tab checks for new mail about every ten seconds while it is in view and about every minute while it is hidden.

Quiet while you are looking

Turn on Only when this tab is hidden and alerts stay away while you are already looking at OpenEmail. Hide the tab and they come through.

Three chimes, three switches

The Sound tab has a chime for new mail, one for the assistant finishing and one for mail sent, each with its own switch. They are short tones played by the page.

In the product today

Click to open

Clicking an alert opens the conversation it is about.

Matched to your view

Alerts cover unread mail in the workspace and the addresses you are looking at, so they match the inbox in front of you.

Short tones, spaced out

Chimes are short tones, played at least a second and a half apart.

Good practice

Getting the most out of it

  1. 01

    Keep one tab open

Alerts come from the tab, so leave OpenEmail open in one if you want them while you work elsewhere.

  2. 02

    Hide them while you read

If the inbox is in front of you all day, Only when this tab is hidden saves you an alert for mail you can already see.

  3. 03

    Keep the chimes you use

Each chime has its own switch, so new mail can keep its sound while the others stay quiet.
