# Spelling and grammar Checked as you write, on your own device.

Spelling, grammar and wording that could be clearer are underlined in the composer as you type, and a click shows the fixes. The checking runs in your browser, so nothing you write is sent anywhere to be checked.

In short

## What is a spelling and grammar checker?

A checker reads your writing as you go and marks what it doubts, from a misspelt word to a verb that does not agree with its subject. A mark is only a suggestion: you see the fixes, and you decide.

How it works

## Three colours, three kinds of problem

Amber marks spelling, blue marks grammar, and a dotted grey line marks wording that could be clearer. Click or right-click one to see the fixes.

## Checked inside your browser

The checker runs in the background on your device, so your words are never sent away to be checked and nothing is billed. It downloads once, about 7 MB, the first time you click into a message.

## Names and links stay unmarked

The names of the people you are writing to are never flagged. Links, email addresses, file names and merge fields are skipped, and quoted text and code are left alone.

What you get

## In the product today

A dictionary of your own

Add to dictionary keeps a word for good, on every device you use.

Your kind of English

American, British, Canadian, Australian or Indian spelling, taken from your browser’s language.

Other languages left alone

A paragraph in another language is recognised and left without underlines.

Good practice

## Getting the most out of it

1. 01

   Add the words you use

Put product names and jargon in the dictionary once, and they stay unmarked on every device.
2. 02

   Ignore is for this draft

Ignore hides a mark in that draft only. For a word you will write again, use Add to dictionary.
3. 03

   Set the English you write

Spelling follows your browser’s language, so set it to the English you write, British or Australian for example.
