# Spelling and grammar

Spelling, grammar and clarity suggestions as you write, checked on your own device.

## Details

- Words are underlined softly as you write: amber for spelling, blue for grammar and dotted grey where the wording could be clearer. Click or right-click one to see the fixes. Ignore hides it in that draft, and Add to dictionary keeps the word for good, up to 200 words, on every device you use.
- The checker runs inside your browser, in the background, so nothing you write is sent anywhere to be checked, and nothing is billed. It downloads once, about 7 MB, the first time you click into a message, and loads from the browser’s cache after that.
- It checks English, with American, British, Canadian, Australian or Indian spelling taken from your browser’s language. A paragraph in another language is recognised and left without underlines.
- The names of the people you are writing to are never flagged. Links, email addresses, file names and merge fields are skipped, and quoted text and code are left alone. The subject line is not checked.
- Turn it off with Check spelling and grammar, on the Mail behaviour tab of Account → General. The browser’s own spellcheck stays off in the composer either way, so there is only ever one set of underlines, and with this switched off there are none. On a touch screen, or if the checker cannot load, the device’s own spellcheck is used instead.
