# Import from Outlook and Microsoft 365

Copy an Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 mailbox with a Microsoft sign-in, no password needed.

## Before you start

- Microsoft takes no app password for mail any more, so this import signs in with Microsoft instead. OpenEmail never sees your Microsoft password.
- The sign-in asks to read your mail, your contacts and your calendars. It asks for nothing that changes them.
- The old mailbox is only ever read. Nothing in it is moved, marked as read or deleted, so it keeps working exactly as before while the import runs and afterwards.

## Sign in and start

1. In OpenEmail, open Migrations, then From a mailbox, and choose Outlook.
2. Choose the address the mail lands on, decide whether spam and trash come too, and whether contacts and calendars come as well.
3. Choose Sign in with Microsoft, sign in to the old account and approve what it asks.
4. Microsoft sends you back to OpenEmail and the import starts. You can close the page: History shows the progress.

## Work and school accounts

- Some organisations stop people approving apps themselves. Microsoft then says that admin approval is needed, and OpenEmail shows a link to copy.
- Send that link to your Microsoft administrator. They approve OpenEmail once for the organisation, and after that Sign in with Microsoft works for you.

## What comes across

- Every folder becomes a label, with Inbox, Sent Items, Junk Email and Deleted Items filed as Inbox, Sent, Spam and Trash. Read and flagged state are kept, and categories come as labels.
- Contacts become cards in your address book and join no audience. Calendar events become events of your own, and nobody on them is emailed.
- Microsoft slows a mailbox that is read quickly. The import then pauses, History says when it carries on, and it picks up where it stopped.
- A message the address already holds is skipped, so running an import twice, or after uploading an export file, adds only what is missing.

## Afterwards

- The permission is kept sealed until the import finishes, for 30 days at most, then wiped.
- To withdraw it yourself, remove OpenEmail under the apps you have given access to in your Microsoft account. If an import was still running, History then offers Sign in again.
