# Gmail on the web

Receive the mail of an address in Gmail on the web by forwarding it, and send from it there with Send mail as and the SMTP server of OpenEmail.

## How it works

Gmail on the web no longer checks mail from other accounts, so it cannot sign in to the address the way an app does. Forward the address to Gmail to receive there, and add it under Send mail as to send from it.

- Gmail retired Check mail from other accounts, its POP fetching, so it can no longer collect mail from another server by itself.
- Receiving: OpenEmail forwards each message to your Gmail address as it arrives, and keeps its own copy.
- Sending: Gmail hands what you send as the address to the SMTP server of OpenEmail, which sends it with the same checks and limits as the web app and files a copy in Sent.

## Forward the address to Gmail

1. In OpenEmail, open the address under Settings → Addresses, go to its Forwarding tab and forward it to your Gmail address. Keep its mail in OpenEmail as well, because an address that only forwards cannot sign in to send.
2. Gmail receives an email asking it to confirm the forward. Open the link in it, and forwarding starts.

- The confirmation link works for a week. Until someone opens it, the mail stays in OpenEmail only.
- If the confirmation lands in the Spam folder of Gmail, open it from there.

## Send from the address in Gmail

1. Create an app password for the address on its Mail apps tab.
2. In Gmail, open Settings, choose See all settings, then Accounts and Import. Under Send mail as, choose Add another email address, enter your name and the address, and continue.
3. Enter SMTP server `smtp.openemail.uk`, port 465, the address as the username and the app password as the password, choose Secured connection using SSL, and add the account.
4. Gmail emails a confirmation code to the address. It arrives in OpenEmail and, through the forward, in Gmail. Enter the code in Gmail, or open the link in that email.

| Field | What to enter |
| --- | --- |
| Name | Your name, as the people you write to see it |
| Email address | The whole address, such as `support@acme.com` |
| SMTP Server | `smtp.openemail.uk` |
| Port | `465` |
| Username | The whole address |
| Password | The app password |
| Connection | Secured connection using SSL |

From then on, pick the address in the From field when you write in Gmail. That mail goes out through OpenEmail, and a copy lands in Sent there.

## Reply from the address

- In Accounts and Import, under When replying to a message, choose Reply from the same address the message was sent to. Gmail then answers mail that reached the address from the address itself.
- To start every new message from the address, choose make default beside it under Send mail as.
- In a Google Workspace account, Accounts and Import is called Accounts.

## If it does not work

- Gmail could not connect to the SMTP server: check port 465 with Secured connection using SSL. Gmail suggests port 587 with TLS, which OpenEmail does not offer.
- Gmail says authentication failed: the username must be the whole address, and the password an app password for it, not your Google or OpenEmail password.
- The confirmation code never reaches Gmail: check on the Forwarding tab of the address that the forward was confirmed. The code also reaches the Inbox of the address in OpenEmail.
- When OpenEmail refuses a message, Gmail emails you a bounce that quotes its answer, such as You cannot send as or Sending limit reached. The troubleshooting page explains each one.
