# Android mail apps

Add an address to Samsung Email, Thunderbird for Android, K-9 Mail or any other mail app on Android.

## Before you start

- You need an app password for the address, made in the Passwords view of its Mail apps tab under Settings → Addresses, or a setup link someone emailed you.
- Any Android app that adds a mail account by hand works. The Gmail app has a page of its own.

## Samsung Email

1. Open Samsung Email. On first use it lists providers. Otherwise open the menu, then Settings, then Add account.
2. Choose Other, enter the address and the app password, and tap Manual setup.
3. Choose IMAP account.
4. Under Incoming server, enter the whole address as Username, the app password, `imap.openemail.uk` as IMAP server, SSL as Security type and 993 as Port. Leave IMAP path prefix empty.
5. Under Outgoing server, enter `smtp.openemail.uk` as SMTP server, SSL as Security type and 465 as Port. Keep Require authentication to send emails on, with the same username and password.
6. Tap Sign in.

## Thunderbird for Android and K-9 Mail

1. Add an account and enter the address. When the app cannot find the settings, it asks for them.
2. Under Incoming server settings, choose IMAP and enter Server `imap.openemail.uk`, Security SSL/TLS, Port 993, the whole address as Username, Authentication Normal password and the app password.
3. Under Outgoing server settings, enter Server `smtp.openemail.uk`, Security SSL/TLS, Port 465, the same username, Authentication Normal password and the app password.
4. Choose how often to check for mail, and finish.

> Both apps can push the Inbox, which keeps a connection open so new mail shows within about 20 seconds. Without push, they check on the schedule you chose.

## Any other app

Every other app asks for the same settings under its own names. Look for a manual or advanced setup and use the settings on the main mail apps page, with SSL/TLS on every server and the whole address as the username.

- Avoid the choices that accept all certificates. The certificates of OpenEmail are valid, and that choice only takes a protection away.
- Turn on sign-in for the outgoing server, with the same username and password as for incoming mail.

## If it does not work

- The app offers only STARTTLS or port 587: choose SSL/TLS or SSL, and set the ports to 993 and 465 by hand.
- The app says the password is wrong: the username must be the whole address on both servers, and the password an app password that has not been revoked.
- The app asks for the password again and again: the password was revoked, or sign-ins paused for up to 15 minutes after too many wrong passwords. Correct the password in the app, then wait before trying again.
